During her 20 years of service at the Yuma Elementary School District, Karen Johnson has become an inspiring leader who sets high standards for herself and her staff. She is a team player with the ultimate goal to educate young minds through complete child nutrition. In one unique approach, she invited the whole school to participate in "Free Breakfast Wednesday" to promote the meal occasion. This innovative idea quickly increased breakfast participation from 18% to 43%. Karen insists that her program "go new school by going old school" by making as many dishes as possible from scratch. Recipes are changed to incorporate whole grains and meet other nutritional requirements. Karen has served as the SNA national President and was the Chief Marketer for the Name Assessment Task Force that promoted the national association\'s name change from ASFSA to SNA.
